Project Description

UAE University is one of the UAE’s leading academic institutions. Located in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, its campus comprises a wide range of educational, research and operational facilities that must remain reliable, safe and fully functional throughout the year.

As part of ongoing building maintenance and performance enhancement, a specialised solution was required to strengthen the gutter system of one of the university’s buildings. The project involved demanding humidity and condensation conditions, several complex gutter interfaces and the need to complete the installation within an active educational environment.

The gutter system included critical areas such as joints, flow transitions, outlets and perimeter connections. Treating these details separately would not have provided the continuity required for reliable long-term performance. The project therefore called for a coordinated waterproofing strategy covering the complete rainwater drainage area.

Effisus supported the project by combining a purpose-designed gutter waterproofing system with project-specific technical guidance. The objective was to deliver a durable solution that could be adapted to the existing gutter configuration while supporting the university’s long-term operational and maintenance requirements.

The Effisus Solution

The Effisus AllTiteGutter System was selected as the primary waterproofing solution for the project. Developed specifically for gutter applications, the system creates a durable protective layer across the gutter surface and its most critical interfaces.

Effisus AllTiteGutter is a self-adhesive and fully customisable system designed to perform under demanding conditions, including permanent water exposure, elevated temperatures and thermal movement. Its adaptable design enables it to accommodate different gutter widths, materials, geometries and connection details.

For the UAE University project, the system was tailored to address:

· Gutter bases and side walls

· Joints and overlaps

· Corners and changes in direction

· Water-flow areas and transitions

· Drainage outlets and penetrations

· Perimeter connections

· Irregular interfaces requiring waterproofing continuity

The AllTiteGutter membrane provided the main waterproofing layer, while complementary Effisus solutions supported more complex detailing requirements. These included Effisus Bond FT, Effisus TiteGutter3, Effisus Cleaner LV and compatible primers and application tools.

Together, these components enabled the project team to prepare the substrates correctly, establish secure adhesion and carefully treat joints, corners, outlets and terminations. By using products designed to work as part of one system, the project avoided the compatibility risks associated with combining unrelated materials across different sections of the gutter.

The membrane’s self-adhesive application also supported an efficient and controlled installation process without the need for specialised machinery. This was particularly important within an operational university building, where the works had to be coordinated around ongoing activities and completed with minimal disruption.

The Effisus Team Approach

Effisus’ engineering team assessed the project conditions, reviewed the existing gutter configuration and identified the interfaces requiring particular attention.

This reflects Effisus’ end-to-end technical support approach, which combines design engineering expertise, bespoke detailing, product compatibility guidance and on-site assistance. The aim is to ensure that each weatherproofing solution is correctly specified, practical to install and appropriate for the actual conditions of the building.

For UAE University, the Effisus team considered the gutter geometry, environmental exposure and operational constraints before defining the most suitable installation strategy. This early assessment helped determine how the different system components should be combined and where dedicated detailing was required.

The gutter was approached as one complete rainwater drainage system rather than a collection of isolated areas. This enabled Effisus to consider the relationship between the main surfaces, flow paths, outlets and perimeter connections and to develop a solution that maintained waterproofing continuity throughout.

The installation strategy included:

· Assessing and preparing the relevant substrates

· Positioning the membrane across the main gutter surfaces

· Securing joints and overlaps

· Developing dedicated details for corners, overlaps and outlets

· Finishing perimeter connections to preserve system continuity

Clear technical coordination between Effisus and the project stakeholders helped translate the project requirements into a practical solution that could be implemented efficiently on site.

Our Added Value

An integrated system rather than isolated treatments

Effisus provided a coordinated waterproofing strategy covering the complete gutter area. By considering every interface as part of the wider drainage system, the solution supported consistent performance across surfaces, joints, overlaps, outlets and terminations.

A solution tailored to the existing building

The AllTiteGutter System was adapted to the specific geometry, materials and connection details present at UAE University. This project-specific approach enabled both standard areas and complex interfaces to be incorporated into one continuous solution.

Technical support from assessment to installation

Effisus combined product expertise with practical engineering support. The technical team helped assess the conditions, define the system configuration and establish a clear installation approach, giving the project stakeholders greater confidence throughout the process.

Reduced installation complexity

The self-adhesive application and compatible system components supported a straightforward and controlled installation process. This helped the contractor work efficiently without specialised machinery while limiting disruption within the active university environment.

Reliable product compatibility

The use of membranes, detailing products, primers and accessories developed to work together reduced the risks associated with combining unrelated materials. This coordinated approach supported secure adhesion and consistent treatment of the gutter’s most demanding details.

Support for long-term building performance

The purpose-designed system contributes to a preventative maintenance strategy by strengthening protection across the complete rainwater drainage area. Its durability and adaptability can help reduce the need for repeated local interventions and support more efficient maintenance over the building’s lifecycle.

A Complete Approach to Gutter Waterproofing

The UAE University project demonstrates the importance of treating gutter waterproofing as a complete building-envelope challenge.

Long-term performance depends on more than the main gutter surface. Every joint, corner, transition, outlet and perimeter connection must contribute to a continuous and compatible waterproofing system.

Through the Effisus AllTiteGutter System, complementary detailing solutions and dedicated technical support, Effisus helped deliver a durable, integrated solution designed to strengthen the gutter system and support the university’s long-term maintenance objectives.
