Façade membranes are critical to the building’s weatherproofing, comfort and energy efficiency, moreover, they play a key role in enhancing the façade’s durability.  

Vapor membranes, also known as airtight vapour control layers (AVCL), block water, air and vapor from passing through, therefore protecting buildings from condensation while improving overall airtightness and energy efficiency. Mould build-up is therefore avoided, mitigating health issues and material decay expected to result from condensation. 

On geographies with wet and cold seasons, such as the UK and most European countries, these are regularly applied on the inner layer of the façade. Conversely, when temperatures are high most of the year, such as in the Middle Eastern countries, these are installed on the outer layer. The position of the AVCL membrane is driven by condensation physics, not construction habits.
